Dystopian Carousel
Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh, PA,USA, 2023-2024
Dystopian Carousel is an art installation created for the exhibition Unsettling Matter, Gaining Ground, curated by Theo Issaias and Ala Tannir at the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh, PA, running from August 2023 to January 2024. This piece explores a fire that has been burning continuously since 1962 beneath the abandoned town of Centralia, Pennsylvania. As the third part of a series examining the geo-environmental and spatial effects of underground seam fires, Dystopian Carrousel illustrates how these landscapes serve as sentinel lands—acting as reminders and breaking points within systems of extraction.

The installation is conceived as a Mise en Abyme, a self referential device, where the Dystopian Carousel is in motion, placed in front of its image
